Tombs & Memorials
In the townland of Lemnaheltia in County Galway, there stands a mausoleum that has, for now, slipped quietly out of the documentary record.
A mausoleum is a free-standing above-ground tomb, often built to house the remains of a family of some local prominence, and their presence in the Irish landscape is relatively uncommon outside of estate demesnes and urban cemeteries. That one exists here, recorded as a monument in its own right, suggests a structure of some architectural or historical significance, even if the details of who built it, and when, remain temporarily inaccessible.
