Ringforts

Ringfort (Rath), Townparks, Co. Galway

There is something quietly vertiginous about a place that exists more on paper than on the ground.

On a south-west-facing slope in grassland near the north-western edge of Tuam, a ringfort once stood, and the only reliable witness to its existence is the cartographic record of the Ordnance Survey's six-inch maps, which captured the western half of a roughly circular enclosure before whatever remained of it vanished entirely. Today, no visible surface trace survives. The site is, in the most literal sense, an absence.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when constructed from earthworks, were the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. They functioned as enclosed farmsteads, with a raised circular bank and external ditch demarcating a family's living space and protecting livestock. This particular example measured approximately thirty metres along its north-south axis, making it a modest specimen. What the OS maps recorded was already incomplete: a field boundary had cut across the enclosure at both its northern and southern ends, meaning the eastern half had likely been erased before the surveyors arrived to document what remained. Some 150 metres to the east, a separate earthwork was recorded as well, suggesting that this part of Tuam's townland was once a more populated early medieval landscape than its current suburban fringe would imply.

The proximity to Tuam is itself worth pausing on. Tuam was a place of considerable ecclesiastical and political significance in medieval Ireland, seat of an archdiocese and a royal centre of Connacht. That ringforts once occupied its immediate hinterland is unsurprising in itself, but their erasure by field boundaries and later development is a familiar pattern, one that leaves the archaeological record dependent on maps of maps, and inventories of things no longer there.
