Ringfort (Rath), Beaghroe, Co. Galway

Near the summit of a hill in the undulating grassland of Beaghroe in County Galway, a roughly oval earthwork sits quietly in the landscape, its banks and surrounding ditch still largely intact after perhaps fifteen centuries of existence.

What makes it worth pausing over is the combination of its state of preservation and the small, telling signs that it has never quite been left alone: several cattle gaps cut through the inner bank, evidence that successive generations of farmers found it more practical to adapt the old enclosure than to ignore it.

This is a rath, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in Ireland, typically consisting of a raised circular or subcircular bank, sometimes topped originally with a timber palisade, enclosing a domestic area where a farming family would have lived. The Beaghroe example measures roughly 51 metres east to west and just over 45 metres north to south, making it a reasonably substantial example of the type. Its defining features are the earthen inner bank and the external fosse, a defensive ditch that survives from the south-east around through the west and on to the north-west. There are also traces of what may be a second, outer bank running from the south-east around to the south, which, if confirmed, would suggest a slightly more elaborate original construction than a single-bank rath. Such concentric arrangements are generally associated with higher-status occupants in early medieval Ireland, though without excavation it is impossible to say more than that the possibility exists here.
