Ringfort (Rath), Queensfort, Co. Galway

On a slight rise in the rolling grassland of north County Galway, a roughly oval earthwork sits in a condition that is fair but not untouched.

The enclosure measures about 40 metres east to west and 34 metres north to south, its boundary formed by a stone-faced bank with a fosse, the term for the accompanying ditch dug to reinforce the height of the bank above it, running between. At the southern side there are faint traces of what may have been a second, outer bank, a feature that would have added a further layer of definition to the site. A field wall has since been laid directly over the enclosing elements at the south, one of the quieter ways a working landscape absorbs older structures over centuries.

This is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and most often associated with farming settlements of the period. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation. What distinguishes this one, beyond its subcircular shape and its stone-faced rather than purely earthen bank, is the damage it has sustained at the north-east and south-west, where quarrying has eaten into the monument. That encroachment is a reminder of how many such sites were regarded in the post-medieval period, not as ancient monuments but as convenient sources of loose stone or aggregate. The place-name Queensfort, which attaches to the townland, is itself an anglicised form that likely reflects an older Irish name relating to the fort, though the precise etymology is not recorded here.
