The structure is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, which was a circular or near-circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and an outer ditch, known as a fosse. Raths were the standard settlement form across early medieval Ireland, typically housing a farming family and their livestock, and thousands survive in varying states of preservation across the country. This one measures roughly 47.7 metres on its north-south axis, placing it within a fairly typical size range, though what survives is fragmentary.

The rath sits within woodland that once formed part of a landed demesne, the private estate grounds of a country house, and that setting has both protected and obscured it. The bank and fosse are best preserved along the arc running from the south-east through the west and around to the north. A gap visible on the western side appears to be a modern intrusion rather than an original entrance, which means the feature that might once have told us something about how the enclosure was used and accessed has likely been lost. Beyond these basic outlines, the site offers little that is immediately legible to the eye. It belongs to that category of archaeological monument that rewards patience and some prior reading rather than immediate visual drama.
