Ringfort (Cashel), Culleen, Co. Galway

On a low rise in the rolling grassland of north Galway, a faint scatter of collapsed stone marks what was once a cashel, the term used for a ringfort built from drystone rather than earthen banks.

At roughly 41 metres across its longest axis, it would have been a substantial enclosure in its time, the kind of place that served as a defended farmstead during the early medieval period, perhaps between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Today, very little of that presence survives above ground.

What remains is fragmentary at best. The enclosing wall, subcircular in plan, can still be traced at the northern and southern edges, where tumbled stone gives a sense of the original circuit, but from the south-west around to the north-west the wall has vanished entirely, leaving no visible surface trace. A later field wall cuts across the monument at the north-east and south-east, and to the east of that intrusion the enclosure is marked only by a low scarp in the ground rather than any standing masonry. Inside the interior, there is evidence of a probable souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber that would have served the original occupants as a place of storage or refuge, though its condition is not recorded in detail. The combination of the collapsed perimeter and the later agricultural boundary running through it tells a quiet story of reuse: the land kept being farmed long after anyone remembered, or cared, what the stone circle had originally been for.
