Chapel, Rushveala, Co. Galway

Some places earn their names by outlasting everything that once justified them.

At Rushveala in County Galway, a deserted cluster of houses carries the placename Oldchapel, yet the building that presumably gave it that name has left no physical trace whatsoever. No outline in the ground, no scatter of dressed stone, no collapsed gable wall; just an absence, and a name that quietly insists something was once there.

The site sits at the southern end of what is now an abandoned settlement, and the chapel itself is thought to have been a Roman Catholic place of worship, possibly dating to the nineteenth century. The reasoning is largely circumstantial but coherent: the chapel does not appear on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which was produced in the 1830s, suggesting it may have been built after that survey was completed, or that it had already fallen out of use or recognition by that point. Roman Catholic chapels of that era were often modest structures, built quickly from local materials during a period when formal ecclesiastical architecture was not always within reach of rural congregations, which may partly explain how thoroughly this one has disappeared. The cluster of houses around it is itself deserted now, leaving the whole area in a kind of layered silence, one abandonment folded inside another.

What makes Rushveala quietly compelling is precisely this quality of total erasure. The placename Oldchapel does the work of the archaeology here, preserving the memory of a building that the ground itself no longer corroborates.
