On the 1932 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a hachured marking on Annagh Hill in County Galway hints at a hollow or earthwork of some kind.
Hachures, the short lines used by cartographers to indicate slopes and depressions, give a feature an air of significance on paper, the suggestion of something worth recording. When someone finally went to look in 1983, the reality was quieter: a disused quarry pit, long since abandoned and gradually swallowed by trees.
