In the townland of Maíros in County Galway, there survives the remains of an old church, a site whose quiet presence in the landscape belies a small but telling story about how we categorise and record the past.
For years, the site was grouped under a single classification that bundled church and graveyard together, a practice that has since been recognised as too blunt an instrument for meaningful archaeological record-keeping. The two features have now been separated into distinct entries, each given its own identity within the record.
