Enclosure, Clonbrock Demesne, Co. Galway

In the pastureland of the Clonbrock Demesne in County Galway, there is an archaeological site that exists almost entirely on paper.

A circular enclosure, roughly thirty-five metres across, was recorded on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, the ambitious nineteenth-century mapping project that captured the Irish landscape in remarkable detail. Today, nothing visible remains above ground. No bank, no ditch, no depression in the grass betrays that anything was ever there.

Circular enclosures of this kind are among the most common archaeological features in the Irish countryside. They are typically the remains of a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead used throughout the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, in which a family and their livestock sheltered within a raised earthen bank. Thousands survive across Ireland in varying states of preservation, but many others have been levelled by centuries of agriculture, drainage, and land improvement. The Clonbrock example appears to belong to this latter category. By the time the site was catalogued for the Archaeological Inventory of County Galway, compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra, and Paul Gosling and published in 1999, no surface trace was recorded as surviving.

What remains, then, is a cartographic ghost. The first edition OS map fixes a moment in time when the enclosure was still legible in the landscape, or at least recognisable to the surveyors who passed through. That record is now the only evidence that something once stood here, in a field that shows no sign of it.
