Ringfort, Skehanagh, Co. Galway

On a south-facing slope in the grasslands of Skehanagh in County Galway, a roughly oval enclosure sits quietly in the landscape, its edges still legible after well over a thousand years.

The earthwork measures around 33 metres north to south and 29.5 metres east to west, its boundary marked by a bank surviving best at the north-west and elsewhere by a scarp, the kind of low, stepped drop in the ground that you might walk past without recognising it for what it is.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common monument type in the Irish countryside. Ringforts were typically farmsteads of the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD, their circular or subcircular banks enclosing a family's dwelling space and protecting livestock from both animal and human threat. What makes this particular example worth a second look is the rectangular annexe attached to the enclosure at its northern edge. Measuring 18 metres east to west and 9.5 metres wide, it is defined by a grassed-over stone bank, the kind of low ridge that becomes visible only once you know what you are looking for. Such annexes, sometimes called outworks, are thought to have served as enclosures for animals or as secondary working areas, and their presence at a ringfort is a relatively uncommon detail, suggesting a degree of complexity in how this farmstead was organised and used.
