Enclosure, Kellysgrove, Co. Galway

In the gently undulating grassland of Kellysgrove in County Galway, a tear-shaped patch of ground marks what was once a substantial oval enclosure.

By the time the third edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded it in 1946, it measured roughly fifty metres on its longer axis and thirty-five metres across, oriented northwest to southeast. Today even that outline has been largely erased, the site disturbed by quarrying activity that has left its own confusing signature in the landscape.

What survives is fragmentary but legible to a careful eye. A scarp, the remnant earthwork edge, traces the original boundary, and a shallow depression running from the north-northeast around through east to southeast may represent an external fosse, the defensive ditch that would once have enclosed the whole structure. A bank is also visible just beyond a field boundary lying roughly a metre to the northwest, suggesting the enclosure once had more extent than is immediately obvious. To the southeast, a series of banks extends outward from the main enclosing element, though these are likely the product of later quarrying rather than original features. Enclosures of this general type, roughly circular or oval earthworks defined by a bank and ditch, are among the most common class of monument in the Irish countryside, often interpreted as the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval landholders, though without excavation the date and function of any individual example remain uncertain.

The site sits in ordinary agricultural land, and its remaining features are subtle enough that they would be easy to overlook without knowing what to look for. The scarp and the shallow fosse depression are best observed in low, raking light, when earthwork topography that disappears in flat midday sun tends to reassert itself as a pattern of shadows across the grass.
