Ringfort (Rath), Treanlaur, Co. Galway

A low grassy bank in a field above Mweeloon Bay is easy to walk past without a second thought, which is precisely what makes this small earthwork in Treanlaur worth pausing over.

What survives is a circular rath, the Irish version of a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. At around twenty-eight metres in diameter, it is a modest example, its defining features reduced over centuries of farming to a bank roughly five metres wide at its base and a shallow external fosse, or ditch, that encircles most of the circuit. On the western side, even that shallow ditch has disappeared entirely into the landscape.

The site sits on a south-facing slope amid mixed farmland, with an inlet of Mweeloon Bay visible to the south-west, a position that would have offered whoever lived here both outlook and a degree of natural shelter. References to the site appear in records as far back as Holt in 1912 and McCaffrey in 1952, suggesting it has been known to local historians and surveyors for well over a century, even as its physical remains have continued to erode. The earthwork's poor state of preservation is not unusual; the vast majority of Ireland's estimated forty to fifty thousand ringforts have been damaged or diminished by ploughing, land clearance, and the general pressures of agricultural use over many generations.

Visitors approaching the area should expect the rath to read as little more than a gentle undulation in the grass, its bank barely distinguishable from the surrounding slope. The western fosse, absent now at ground level, means the circuit is only legible on the eastern and southern sides. A low, raking light, particularly on a clear morning or late afternoon, can help pick out the slight changes in elevation that betray the bank's outline.
