Ringfort (Cashel), Caherpeak, Co. Galway

In the reclaimed pastureland of Caherpeak in County Galway, a cashel sits so thoroughly absorbed into the working landscape that the boundary walls of later farms now cut straight across it.

A cashel is a ringfort built from dry-laid stone rather than earthen banks, a form common across the west of Ireland where stone was more plentiful than workable soil. This one measures roughly 34 metres in diameter, though you would be forgiven for missing it entirely: the enclosing wall has long since collapsed and greened over, and farmers clearing adjacent fields have added their own piles of loose stone against its south-eastern arc, blurring the line between ancient structure and agricultural tidying.

The site appears in a 1952 survey by McCaffrey, catalogued as number 52 in that record, which suggests it had already settled into its current semi-legible state by the mid-twentieth century. Two separate field boundaries now impose themselves on the monument, one running over the cashel wall to the west and another cutting across the interior on a roughly north-east to south-west axis. That second wall is particularly disruptive, yet it may inadvertently preserve something useful: on either side of it, faint traces of what could be internal divisions within the original enclosure are still visible. Such internal features, often the footings of ancillary structures or animal pens, are among the details most quickly lost when a ringfort is robbed for building material or ploughed flat, so their survival here, however ambiguous, is worth noting.
