Burial Grounds

Grave Yard, Carrowmore, Co. Galway

Among the many graveyards in County Galway that pair old ground with relatively recent stones, the one at Carrowmore is quietly notable for the near-total absence of early material.

Despite sitting beside a medieval church, a building whose origins reach back centuries before the surrounding townland's modern memory, the graveyard contains almost no physical evidence of that long span of time. When surveyors examined the site, they found just a single graveslab that might plausibly date to the eighteenth century, positioned beside the south wall of the church. Every other marked grave belongs to the nineteenth.

The graveyard itself is a solid, practical enclosure, roughly rectangular in shape and measuring approximately 58 metres on its northeast to southwest axis and 51 metres across. A stone wall defines its boundary, and entry is made through the southeast corner. The medieval church it accompanies, recorded separately, would once have served the surrounding community as both spiritual centre and anchor for burial rites that presumably continued here across many generations. What happened to the earlier grave markers is the kind of question these places rarely answer. Stone slabs weather, sink, get repurposed, or simply disappear over centuries of agricultural and social change. The visible record begins, to all practical purposes, around 1800.
