A rath, to use the Irish term for this class of monument, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and, in many cases, a surrounding ditch, built during the early medieval period as a farmstead or high-status residence. This particular example measures around 42 metres in diameter, which places it comfortably within the typical range for such sites, and its bank survives in fair condition across most of its circuit.

What makes the site quietly interesting is what is missing and what may not be missing at all. The bank leaves no visible surface trace along its south-eastern to southern arc, nor between the south-south-west and south-west, suggesting that those sections have been worn or ploughed away over the centuries. A gap on the northern side, however, may be something else entirely: a deliberate original entrance rather than later damage. Inside the enclosure, a number of earthworks hint at internal divisions, possibly the foundations of structures or the boundaries between different functional areas within what was once a working farmstead. An old field bank also radiates outward from the monument at the north, a detail that suggests the rath did not exist in isolation but was once part of a broader pattern of agricultural organisation across this landscape. The marshy ground surrounding it may itself have offered a degree of natural defence or simply defined the edges of workable land, shaping where the enclosure was placed in the first instance.
