Ringfort (Rath), Gortymadden, Co. Galway

In the rolling pastureland of Gortymadden in east County Galway, a circular earthwork sits quietly misread by the landscape around it.

What makes this particular site worth a second look is not grandeur but complication: a modest rath overlaid with later alterations, the original structure tangled up with additions that may belong to an entirely different era.

A rath is a ringfort, the type of enclosed farmstead that was built across Ireland in the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This one measures approximately 25 metres in diameter and is defined by two banks with a fosse, or ditch, running between them. The fosse and outer bank survive well enough to be read from the south-west around to the north, and briefly again at the south-east, though much of the monument is poorly preserved. More puzzling are two parallel earthen banks, each about 11.5 metres long and 2.5 metres apart, that extend from the south-west of the monument and then curve away in opposite directions, following the edge of a natural terrace in the ground. These do not appear to be early medieval in origin; they may date instead from the nineteenth century, added for agricultural or drainage purposes long after the rath itself had fallen out of use. The site also has a souterrain associated with it, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber of the kind often found in connection with ringforts, likely used for storage or as a refuge.

What the site offers, then, is a layered puzzle rather than a clean monument. The original enclosure, the later earthen banks, the subterranean passage beneath, all of it sitting in ordinary farmland, the kind of field a person might walk past without registering that the ground beneath their feet carries several centuries of accumulated use and adaptation.
