Settlement Sites
Beneath the townland of Kilmeen in County Galway, there is a souterrain: an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, built by hand, most likely during the early medieval period.
These structures are found across Ireland in their hundreds, and yet each one retains something quietly unsettling about it. They were constructed, probably, as places of refuge or storage, dug into the earth beside ringforts and early farmsteads, cool and dark and deliberately hard to find. The one at Kilmeen is recorded as a monument, its existence noted, its location fixed. Beyond that, the details remain sparse.
