Burial Grounds

Esker Grave Yard, Esker, Co. Galway

In the northeast corner of a pasture field in County Galway, there is a burial ground that has, in a sense, been quietly disappearing.

No wall surrounds it now, no headstones mark the dead, and the level ground gives little away. Yet the site has been known and named for nearly two centuries, recorded on maps and held in local memory as a place where children were laid to rest.

The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, one of the most detailed cartographic undertakings in Irish history, shows the site as a small walled enclosure, roughly rectangular in shape. By 1944, when the map was revised, something had already changed: the enclosure was gone, the shape had shifted to roughly triangular, and the boundary was no longer shown at all. Local knowledge identifies it as a children's burial ground, which in Irish tradition refers to a cillín, an informal or unofficial burial place used for unbaptised infants and others who, under Catholic practice of the time, could not be interred in consecrated ground. These sites are scattered across the Irish landscape in their hundreds, often unmarked, often on marginal ground or at field boundaries, quietly absorbed back into the land over generations. The absence of any visible enclosure or grave-markers at Esker is, in that context, less a sign of neglect than a reflection of how these places were always understood: known to those who needed to know, invisible to everyone else.

What remains today is essentially a field corner in level pastureland, with nothing on the surface to distinguish it from the surrounding ground. The site endures mainly as a name, carried forward from one map to the next, and as a piece of local knowledge that has so far outlasted the physical traces.
