Ringfort, Ceathrú An Lisín, Co. Galway

At the southern end of Inis Meáin, the middle of the three Aran Islands, a low scatter of stones in a level patch of small fields is all that remains of a structure the islanders have long called Clochar.

It is not dramatic. Half its perimeter is now formed by an ordinary modern field wall, the kind that divides one small holding from the next across the island. Only the arc running from north-northeast to southwest still holds a stretch of original drystone construction, and even that is fragmentary. What it once was, though, is clear enough in outline: a cashel, a type of circular stone-walled enclosure used in early medieval Ireland as a defended farmstead, roughly twenty metres across.

The name Clochar, recorded by Tim Robinson in 1980, is the detail that roots it most firmly in local memory, suggesting the site retained some identity in the landscape long after its walls collapsed. The interior holds two large rubble mounds that may be the collapsed remains of stone huts, the kind of small cellular structures that would have sheltered people or animals within the enclosure's protection. Beyond that, the formal record is sparse. The cashel sits in the townland of Ceathrú An Lisín, and its condition, described as poor, means that what survives above ground gives only a partial picture of whatever settlement once occupied this quiet corner of the island.
