Lady’s Well, Abbey, Co. Galway

Most holy wells in the Irish landscape announce themselves through a single source of water, perhaps a stone surround, and the accumulated offerings of generations.

This one, sitting in pastureland in Abbey, County Galway, turns out to be three wells gathered within a short stretch of ground, enclosed by limestone walls and accompanied by a scatter of small cairns, stone mounds associated with votive or commemorative practice at sacred sites. The arrangement is quietly complex, more like a compound than a simple wayside shrine.

When inspectors visited in September 1985, the principal well sat inside an unroofed rectangular limestone enclosure, roughly four metres east to west and three metres north to south, with walls nearly two metres high. The external face of the south wall had been rendered and whitewashed, and a glass-covered alcove at its centre held a statue of Our Lady, with two concrete steps below it. Rags had been tied to the ivy creeping across the east and south walls; the tying of cloth or rags to a well site is an old form of petition or thanksgiving, the offering left behind as a prayer made physical. Two further wells stood just to the east, each ringed by drystone walling. The more easterly of the two was accessed through a gap barely wide enough for a person, with rough stone steps descending to the water. The western of the pair appeared to have fallen out of use by that point, its mouth covered over with grass. Sometime during the 1990s the enclosure was given a roof, the plasterwork was stripped from the south wall, the ivy was cut back, and the immediate area was landscaped. A medieval doorway that opens into the enclosed area around the wells and cairns may have some connection to a Franciscan friary that once stood approximately 245 metres to the south-southeast, raising the possibility that what looks like a folk devotional site carries a considerably older institutional layer beneath it.
