Ringfort (Rath), Ballycorban, Co. Galway

On a hillslope west of Ballycorban House in County Galway, a roughly circular earthwork sits in a state of quiet dissolution.

It measures approximately 43 metres north to south and 40 metres on its northeast to southwest axis, making it a reasonably substantial example of a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the type of enclosed farmstead that once dotted the Irish countryside in enormous numbers during the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. What survives here is not the bold, grassy bank that visitors might expect from better-preserved examples, but a scarp, essentially a change in ground level where the original bank or ditch has slumped and eroded over centuries into the slope itself.

The monument has been further diminished by agricultural activity. A field boundary cuts across it at both the southwest and northeast, and to the northwest there is no visible surface trace of any enclosing element at all. What remains readable runs only from the northeast, around the southern arc, to the southwest. Associated with the enclosure is a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber that typically served early medieval settlements as a place of storage or refuge. The combination of a rath and an associated souterrain is not unusual in the Irish archaeological record, and the pairing suggests the site was, at some point, a functioning domestic enclosure rather than a purely ceremonial or defensive one.
