Ringfort (Rath), Slatefield, Co. Galway

What remains of this early medieval enclosure in Slatefield, County Galway, is easy to overlook, and that is precisely what makes it worth pausing over.

Set on a south-facing slope in marshy pastureland, the site is a rath, a type of ringfort typically used as a farmstead enclosure during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands of these earthworks survive across Ireland in varying states of preservation, but this one occupies an ambiguous middle ground, recognisable enough to read in the landscape, yet worn enough that the eye needs a moment to find it.

The enclosure is subcircular, measuring approximately fifty metres north to south and forty-two metres east to west. A bank still defines the line from the north-east around through the south and west, while elsewhere the boundary has softened into a scarp, a low natural-looking slope that is in fact the degraded remnant of the original earthwork. An external fosse, the ditch that would once have run around the outside of the bank, no longer holds its shape as an open cut in the ground; instead, a band of different vegetation traces its course, a quiet botanical record of where soil was once disturbed and piled. A number of modern field walls radiate outward from the monument, cutting across and complicating the older geometry, which is a common fate for raths that survived long enough to be incorporated into post-medieval farming boundaries rather than deliberately cleared away.
