Crosses & Monuments
In the townland of Townparks in County Galway stands a high cross, one of those quietly remarkable survivals that Ireland seems almost to take for granted.
High crosses, for those unfamiliar with the form, are the large free-standing stone crosses that proliferated in early medieval Ireland, typically carved with interlace, figural scenes, or abstract ornament, and associated with monastic settlements or significant ecclesiastical sites. That one exists in a place called Townparks, a townland name so administrative in character it could belong almost anywhere, gives the site an oddly anonymous quality, as though the monument has been quietly waiting for someone to pay it closer attention.
