Mills leave their mark on a landscape long after the water has stopped turning.
At Kilroe, in the townland of Inish in County Galway, the remnants of a milling site point to a working past that was once woven into the rhythms of local agricultural life. Corn mills and tucking mills, used for processing woollen cloth, were common enough features of rural Ireland from the medieval period onward, but relatively few survive in any legible form. That a site here has been recorded at all suggests something of substance remains, even if the full picture is difficult to read from the ground.
