The very designation, "designed landscape feature", points to deliberate human intervention in the land, the kind of shaping that accompanied demesne development in Ireland from the seventeenth century onward, when landowners began laying out ornamental grounds, walled gardens, ha-has, water features, and decorative plantations to signal cultivation and taste. That Rocklands merits the classification at all suggests something of that tradition survives or once survived here.
