Quarry, Ballintober, Co. Galway

On the 1933 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, two small hachured features sit quietly in the townland of Ballintober in County Galway.

Hachures, the short radiating lines cartographers used to indicate slopes or depressions, suggested something worth marking, something that broke the surface of the surrounding landscape. When the features were inspected on the ground in 1985, they turned out to be disused sand and gravel quarries, modest workings almost certainly dug to supply local construction needs at some point after 1700.
