Mining
Outside the townland of Ardane in County Galway, a shallow depression in the ground marks the site of a disused gravel pit, the kind of working landscape feature that rarely attracts a second glance.
Gravel extraction of this sort was once common across rural Ireland, supplying the material needed for road surfacing and local construction, and the pits left behind tend to fade quietly into farmland, becoming ponds, scrub, or simply undulations that only an attentive eye would notice as anything other than natural ground.
