Gravel pits are workaday things, dug to supply road construction and building projects, then abandoned once the useful material is exhausted. Yet the fact that this one was considered worth recording at all points to something worth pausing over: the quiet way that extraction sites, once stripped and left, become part of the landscape in their own right, slowly colonised by vegetation and wildlife, their original industrial purpose dissolving into something harder to name.
