In the rolling pastureland of the Eyrecourt Demesne in County Galway, a small indentation in the landscape carries a quietly anticlimactic story.
On the 1944 to 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, a hachured feature appears, those short radiating lines surveyors used to indicate a slope or hollow in the ground. When someone went to look in 1984, the feature turned out to be a disused quarry, the kind of modest working site that once supplied stone for local building and has since been absorbed back into the landscape with very little fuss.
