Quarry, Stowlin, Co. Galway

In the pastureland of Stowlin, a rectangular hollow sits beneath a cover of overgrowth, its edges soft and indistinct, its original purpose only legible if you know what you are looking for.

It is the kind of feature that reads as ordinary landscape until you consider what it once was: a working quarry, cut into the ground at some point after 1700, and then abandoned long enough that by the mid-twentieth century cartographers were already marking it as disused.

The quarry appears on the 1944 to 1945 revision of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, labelled plainly as "Quarry (Disused)", which suggests it had already fallen out of use well before that survey was made. When the site was inspected on the ground in 1984, the mapped feature resolved into a rectangular depression, overgrown and subsiding back into the surrounding fields. The shape of the cut is significant: rectangular quarry workings of this period were typically organised extractions, serving a local need for building stone or road material, and the deliberate geometry distinguishes the feature from natural subsidence or field drainage. Its relatively recent origins, post-dating 1700, place it outside the scope of prehistoric and early historic archaeology, which is part of why it sits so quietly in the record, neither ancient enough to attract excavation nor prominent enough to draw attention on its own.
