Settlement Sites
In the townland of Castletaylor in County Galway, a hut site sits quietly in the landscape, recorded as an archaeological monument but awaiting fuller documentation.
Hut sites of this kind are among the most common yet least celebrated features of the Irish countryside. They represent the physical remains of small, often circular or oval structures used for habitation or shelter at various points from prehistory through to the early medieval period, sometimes later. Their walls, where they survive, typically appear as low earthen or stone banks, easily mistaken for a field boundary or a natural rise in the ground.
