Quarry, Cartron, Co. Galway

A disused sand and gravel pit in Cartron, County Galway might seem an unlikely subject for curiosity, yet these abandoned extraction sites have a quiet geological significance that is easy to overlook.

Sand and gravel pits of this kind were typically worked to supply local construction needs, drawing on deposits left behind by glacial activity during the last ice age, when retreating ice sheets dropped enormous quantities of sediment across the Irish midlands and west.
