Bullaun stone, Derrybrien, Co. Galway

At the eastern edge of a graveyard in Derrybrien, a moss-covered boulder sits partly sunk into the ground on a hillside that falls away sharply towards woodland to the south.

It is easy to overlook, low and irregular in shape, measuring just over a metre at its longest. What makes it worth attention are the two bowls worn or carved into its upper surface, one circular and one oval, the latter holding a shallow pool of water that apparently persists regardless of the season.

The stone is a bullaun, a term for a boulder or outcrop bearing one or more rounded depressions, hollowed either by deliberate human effort or, in some cases, by natural weathering, though the distinction is not always straightforward. Bullauns are found widely across Ireland and are frequently associated with early ecclesiastical sites, holy wells, and burial grounds, which makes this example's position beside a graveyard entirely consistent with the broader pattern. The two bowls here differ noticeably from each other: the northern one is circular, roughly 40 centimetres across and about 12 centimetres deep, while the southern one is slightly larger, oval in plan, and deeper at 18 centimetres. The water that collects in the southern bowl has long been a feature of such stones; at many sites across Ireland, the water in bullaun basins was considered to have curative or protective properties, and the stones themselves were sometimes used in ritual cursing, with the bowls rotated or the water disturbed as part of the act.

The site sits on steeply sloping pastureland, with the view to the north relatively open but the southern aspect closed off by the drop and the tree cover below. The graveyard immediately to the west provides the wider context for the stone's survival in situ, since such features associated with burial grounds were often treated with enough local reverence to escape removal or repurposing over the centuries.
