Lady’s Well, Cuilleendaeagh, Co. Galway

Holy wells in Ireland occupy an unusual place in the landscape, neither fully sacred nor fully secular, and this one in Cuilleendaeagh sits within a burial ground, edged by drystone walls and anchored to the north by a massive limestone boulder.

The well itself is modest, barely a metre across and less than a metre deep, fed by a natural spring that once ran southward through a channel into a stream. When inspectors visited in May 1983, the channel had already been partially blocked by fallen boulders, and the bottom of the well was silted with mud. Overgrown walls flanked it to the east and west, and the whole thing had the feeling of a place still present but only just.

What gives the site some of its particular character is the monument erected immediately to the east of the well by a local man named Edward Mullen, who lived in a house to the northeast of the burial ground. According to local information gathered at the time of the 1983 inspection, Edward had taken it upon himself to care for the well, and he built the stone structure beside it during his own lifetime. It is the kind of arrangement that was once common around Irish holy wells, where stewardship passed informally through families or individuals rather than institutions, and where personal devotion left a physical mark. A ruined building also stands in the northeast sector of the burial ground, adding another layer of occupation to a site that has clearly been used and attended to across different periods. By the time of a follow-up visit in March 2010, the burial ground had deteriorated considerably, with the ground heavily poached, a term referring to the churning of soft earth by livestock, and the area around the well was among the worst affected.
