Settlement Sites
On a south-facing slope of a small hillock in the pastureland of Loughpark, County Galway, there is nothing to see.
That, in a way, is precisely the point. Beneath or somewhere near that unremarkable ground, local tradition holds that a souterrain once lay, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber typically associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, often used for storage or refuge. Alongside it, the same tradition places a ringfort, a circular enclosure of earthen banks that served as a farmstead in the early Christian period. Both have vanished from the surface entirely, leaving no visible trace for anyone who might walk the field today.
