Grange Church (in ruins), Grange, Co. Galway

At first glance, the ruined church at Grange appears to have been almost entirely swallowed by the landscape, its walls reduced to little more than foundation courses with only the corners rising to any meaningful height.

What draws the eye, however, is not what remains standing but what has been quietly repurposed nearby: in the churchyard immediately to the south, fragments of the building's own stonework, including part of an arch, have been laid down as grave-markers. The church has effectively been cannibalised to commemorate the dead it once served.

The building is a simple rectangular structure, oriented east to west and measuring 17.1 metres in length by 7.5 metres in width, sitting towards the foot of a south-facing slope roughly 50 metres north of the Grange River. The surviving features are sparse: the ghost of a doorway at the western end of the south wall, and two robbed window opes, meaning openings from which the dressed stone has been removed and taken elsewhere, along the same wall at its midpoint and eastern end. A large blocked gap in the east gable likely marks the site of a third window. A later wall, added at some point after the church fell out of use, has been built directly on top of the north wall and east gable, which complicates any reading of the original structure and points to the site having remained in some form of use or modification long after the church itself was abandoned. The whole is now heavily overgrown, and separating original fabric from later intervention takes a careful eye.
