Churches & Chapels
Inis Oírr, the smallest of the three Aran Islands off the Galway coast, holds several early Christian remains, and among them is a church that sits within the layered landscape of limestone, drystone walls, and old burial ground that characterises so much of the island.
What makes churches like this one quietly arresting is less any single dramatic feature than the accumulation of time visible in the stonework, the setting, and the way such sites have continued to hold meaning for local communities long after their original congregations are gone.
