Settlement Sites
In the townland of Doonowen, in the west of County Galway, the ground holds the remains of a hut site, a category of monument that can range from the faint circular scar of an early medieval dwelling to the low stone footings of a seasonal shelter used by herders moving livestock to upland pastures.
These structures are easy to overlook, both on the landscape and in the historical record, precisely because they were built for ordinary, practical life rather than ritual or defence.
