Road – class 2 togher, Knockaunroe, Co. Galway

Beneath the bogland of Knockaunroe in County Galway lies a togher, a type of ancient road built from timber and brushwood to carry people and animals across ground that would otherwise be impassable.

Tochairs, as they appear in early Irish sources, were feats of practical engineering, laid down across the soft, waterlogged terrain of Ireland's midlands and west long before any metalled road existed. A class 2 togher specifically refers to a construction of moderate complexity, typically involving split or rounded timbers arranged in a corduroy fashion across peat, secured against the shifting ground beneath.

The bogs of Connacht have preserved these structures with remarkable fidelity. Peat is anaerobic, meaning that organic material buried within it is deprived of the oxygen that would normally drive decay, and timbers laid down centuries or even millennia ago can emerge from cutting or drainage looking almost fresh. Tochairs have been found across Ireland ranging in date from the Bronze Age through to the medieval period, and while many were short crossings of wet flushes or river margins, others formed part of longer routes connecting settlements, grazing lands, or ecclesiastical sites. Without more specific detail available for the Knockaunroe example, it is not possible to say when this particular structure was laid or what journey it once served, but its classification and location place it within a well-recognised tradition of bog road construction in the west of Ireland.
