Children’s burial ground, Knockdoebeg, Co. Galway

Tucked into the north-east corner of an ancient stone enclosure at Knockdoebeg in County Galway, a small children's burial ground sits behind a wall of briar and thorn so dense that the interior is now almost entirely inaccessible.

What little can be seen from the edges suggests a quietly deliberate arrangement: several earthfast boulders, low and flat, averaging roughly twenty centimetres in height, protrude from the ground alongside loose field stones. No inscriptions, no formal markers. Just stone and overgrowth.

The enclosure itself is a cashel, a type of circular or oval dry-stone ringfort that was a common form of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland. Children's burial grounds of this kind are sometimes called cilliní, informal or unconsecrated plots where infants and unbaptised children were interred outside the rites of the official church. The use of a pre-existing ancient structure, a cashel already centuries old, as the location for such burials was not unusual; these liminal, ambiguous spaces, neither fully secular nor fully sacred, were often chosen precisely because they sat outside the ordinary categories of parish life. The site at Knockdoebeg was brought to wider attention by Dr C. Cunniffe, and the local tradition identifying it as a children's burial ground appears to have been preserved in community memory rather than in any documentary record.

The dense vegetation that now covers the cashel interior makes close inspection difficult, and the boulders that mark the burials are only intermittently visible from the perimeter. The site is a reminder that the landscape of rural Galway holds many such places, unremarkable from a distance, carrying considerable weight once you know what you are looking at.
