Cross-slab (present location), Raheen, Co. Galway

A small carved slab now sitting in Raheen, County Galway, carries decoration on both of its faces, which is unusual enough to invite a closer look.

It was not always here. The stone originally stood on High Island, a remote and wind-scoured outcrop off the Connemara coast that was home to an early medieval monastic settlement, and its presence in a mainland location is itself a quiet record of displacement and survival.

The slab is tapered, standing 0.76 metres tall and 0.39 metres wide, with a small tenon, a projecting tongue of stone at the base designed to slot into a socket in the ground, which tells us it was always meant to be upright. The east face carries a Latin cross in low relief, the longer vertical arm of the familiar Christian form, with large forked terminals at the upper and side limbs. The shaft rises from a horizontal bar that ends in small crosslets. Turn the stone around and the west face offers something different: a Greek cross, with arms of equal length, incised rather than raised, also with forked terminals. Between the arms of the cross on this face sit four bosses with hollowed centres, and damaged bosses survive at the upper corners of the slab. Most intriguing is a T-shaped outline carved beneath the cross, which researchers have suggested may be an incomplete or simplified triquetra, the three-cornered knotwork motif associated with early Christian stonework in Ireland and Britain. The stone was recorded by Fisher in 2014 and had previously been documented by White Marshall and Rourke in 2000, placing it within the wider corpus of carved stones associated with the High Island monastery.
