Cross-slab, High Island, Co. Galway

What stands in the graveyard on High Island is not quite what it appears to be.

The cross-slab visible there today is a replica; the original, carved from garnet mica-schist, a metamorphic rock flecked with mineral inclusions, is now held at the OPW depot in Athenry, Co. Galway. The substitution is a quiet reminder of how fragile early medieval stonework is when left exposed to Atlantic weather on a small island off the Connemara coast.

The slab itself is modest in scale, measuring 0.66 metres high, 0.36 metres wide, and 0.09 metres thick, and tapers slightly toward the top. It was found in situ, serving as the footstone of what researchers have classified as pseudo Grave 6 in the northern half of the island's graveyard. The term pseudo grave refers to a grave-shaped setting that may not contain a burial, or whose funerary status is uncertain. Only the east face of the slab was decorated. The carving consists of an incised linear cross placed within a centrally positioned ovoid shape defined by two grooves, a design that gives the cross a contained, almost medallion-like quality. Where the arms of the cross meet the outer ring, they fork into oblique terminals, a detail that suggests considerable care in execution. Each of the four quadrants contains an incised roundel, and linear Greek crosses, which have arms of equal length, are visible in the upper two. The lower right edge of the slab was chamfered, meaning bevelled at an angle, apparently to allow it to be set into a socket in the ground. The slab was probably reused from an earlier context, and a closely similar cross-slab sits on the grave immediately to its north, suggesting this part of the graveyard held pieces of related or connected craftsmanship. Fisher documented the slab in 2014, while White Marshall and Rourke had noted it earlier in their 2000 survey.
