A small limestone pillar standing just 0.7 metres tall on the eastern side of the R458, roughly half a kilometre south-south-east of Kilcolgan, does not demand much attention from passing traffic.

But this neatly worked stone has been quietly counting out the miles since the eighteenth century, its inscription still legible after all that time: '9 From Galway'. Carved into a trapezoidal block with even faces and a slight chamfer along the front margins, it is a precise, functional object, designed not to impress but to inform. Chipped at the mid-right margin and worn around the top, it carries its age honestly. On its upper face, a bird's foot benchmark, the small carved symbol used by the Ordnance Survey to record a fixed point of known elevation, is still visible, added long after the stone's original purpose was set.

The milestone belongs to a group of nine that once marked the Old Galway Road between Gort and Galway, a route that served travellers, carriers, and postal services in an era when knowing the precise distance to the next town was a practical matter of planning rather than curiosity. The series was formally identified and catalogued by the Ardrahan Heritage Group, whose researchers traced all nine surviving examples along this corridor. The 1933 edition of the six-inch Ordnance Survey map still labels the site simply 'M.S.', a reminder that even then these stones were recognised as features worth recording, already old enough to be notable. That the inscription remains readable today, carved into the local limestone with enough depth to outlast two centuries of weather, says something about the care taken by whoever dressed and set the stone in the first place.
