Designed Landscapes
In the townland of Ballynaboola in County Cork, there survives what is classified as a designed landscape feature: a tree-ring, a deliberate planting of trees arranged in a circle or ring formation.
These plantings were a characteristic element of estate landscapes in Ireland from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, used by landowners to ornament their grounds, create sheltered enclosures, or mark particular points in a designed vista. They are often overlooked today precisely because they look, at a casual glance, like ordinary woodland.
