Fulacht fia, Dromskarragh Beg, Co. Cork

In a pasture field in north Cork, the grass tells a story that only becomes legible from a distance.

A roughly oval spread of burnt material, around nineteen metres from north to south and sixteen from east to west, announces itself not through any visible mound or monument but through a subtle difference in how the vegetation grows above it. What lies beneath is a fulacht fia, one of the most common yet persistently enigmatic monument types in the Irish landscape.

Fulachtaí fia are the remains of ancient cooking sites, typically Bronze Age in date, consisting of a trough and a mound of fire-cracked stones. The general method involved heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, a process efficient enough to have been used repeatedly over generations at the same location. The discarded, shattered stones accumulated into a characteristic horseshoe-shaped mound, often dark and waterlogged, which is why these sites tend to survive in low-lying or damp ground. At Dromskarragh Beg, the positioning around fifty metres north of a stream fits this pattern precisely; proximity to a reliable water source was a practical necessity. The site has left no dramatic surface feature, only that differential growth pattern in the pasture, the grass responding to the altered soil chemistry and drainage below, marking out the boundary of centuries of accumulated burnt stone.
