Designed Landscapes
At Ballyheen in County Cork, a circle of trees marks the ground in a way that sits somewhere between ornament and enigma.
Known as a tree-ring, this kind of feature belongs to the tradition of designed landscapes, in which landowners, particularly from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries onward, shaped their surroundings not just for agricultural use but for visual effect, symbolism, and the pleasures of prospect. A ring of trees planted on a rise could frame a view, serve as a landmark, or simply signal that someone had the means and inclination to arrange nature according to a plan.
