A fulacht fia, sometimes spelled fulacht fiadh, is a type of prehistoric cooking site found in enormous numbers across Ireland, with County Cork particularly rich in examples. The typical form is a horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked stone and dark, charred earth, built up over repeated use beside a trough or pit that would have been filled with water. Stones were heated in a fire and dropped into the trough to bring the water to a boil, a method efficient enough to cook large quantities of meat. Most fulachtaí fia date to the Bronze Age, roughly 1500 to 500 BC, though some examples fall outside that range. They are so common across the Irish countryside that encountering one, or at least the dark, humped mound that suggests one, is almost unremarkable. What is slightly more unusual about the Meelaherragh example is how little is actually confirmed about it beyond the tradition that it exists.
