Field system, Castlemagner, Co. Cork

Beneath the fields around Castlemagner in north Cork, a much older landscape lies largely invisible at ground level.

It only becomes legible from the air, where a regular grid of rectilinear cropmarks resolves into the ghost of a field system covering roughly nine hectares, its lines running at a completely different angle to the field boundaries that farmers work today. That misalignment is what makes it interesting: the present agricultural landscape and this earlier one simply do not agree, suggesting a wholesale reorganisation of the land at some point in the past, with the older arrangement quietly buried underneath.

The cropmarks were captured in an aerial photograph taken in July 1989 as part of a systematic survey programme. Cropmarks form when buried features such as ditches, banks, or walls affect the growth of crops above them, producing visible differences in colour or height that only show clearly from height, and often only in dry summers when moisture variation is most pronounced. What the 1989 photograph revealed was not just a field system in outline, but a complex, layered landscape. A ringfort, the remains of a circular enclosed farmstead of early medieval date, is cut across on an east-west axis by the cropmark of a fence line, implying the fence either predates the ringfort or was imposed upon it at a later period. Two ring-ditches and a circular enclosure also sit within the extent of the field system, suggesting the area saw activity across several different periods, each generation leaving its own marks on the ground.
