Stone Monuments
There is a particular category of archaeological site that is defined almost entirely by absence.
The standing stone that once occupied a south-facing slope at Pluckanes in County Cork belongs to this category. It left no visible trace on the ground, was not recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps of either 1842 or 1904, and has since been removed entirely. What remains is essentially a set of coordinates attached to a blank field.
